 If you live in an area where telefonica can't give you a landline, they do have a couple of alternative options. The most common one is called a TRAC phone or radio phone as they once use to be called, this connection is infact a GSM service over the Telefonica Movistar network.
This unit gives you a landline style number so when you callout the number is displayed as a 96 number like any normal Spanish landlines.
This sounds great but there are catches with having a TRAC line. The biggest problems with the TRAC phones are: 1. only any good if you can get a movistar signal - 2. if you want internet it will be very slow and the support from Telefonica is very poor and in most cases there is no support! There are ways to speed up this internet connection, the first and cheapest option is a little program called "On Speed" basically this program compresses images to speed up your connection so infact it doesn't speed up the connection it just makes website images look really bad and doesn't really help when sending and receiving emails.
 The second is a one-way satellite by skyDSL which can give you speeds of upto 24mbps which is pretty fast when you compare it with broadband services in Spain. The way this works is really simple, when you go to the likes of google say, it sends the request outof your TRAC phone and the page comes back via the satellite which means you can download files, emails, music, pictures etc in the click of your fingers but when it comes to sending emails there is still a very big problem with it being slow because you are sending it out over the TRAC phone.
Telefonica have started to come out of there little techno fobic shells and have constructed a new TRAC system which is a two-way satellite service that they call V-SAT. Once again like the TRAC phone you get a normal landline number (96) which is a VoIP telephone unit because it's an internet satellite connection that it uses and with the Telefonica V-SAT you can have broadband setup with it and browse the web at fast speeds but at a pretty hefty cost!!
The Telefonica satellite system like all the other two-way satellites internet connections can have a very pricy installation and the monthly cost are day light robbery.
