This very simple guide will help you hide a users account from the welcome screen in Microsoft Windows XP. This type of tip is very useful if you need to setup a remote user account for the likes of LogMeIn or if you want to setup a Scheduled Task that requires a Windows Account with a password.
To do this follow the steps below:
- Click Start and Then Click Run
- In the open box type regedit then press enter or click OK
- In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following path
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList
- Now in the right hand window right click in the window and a box will pop up with New
- Move the mouse over new and then move the mouse to DWORD VALUE
- You will now see a new value highlighted called New Value #1
- Now type the username you wish to hide from the Welcome Screen then press enter or click OK (Please note you will need to have the account all ready create)
- By default it should already have assigned a value of 0, if not double click the new key and change it to 0
- Now close the Registry Editor and reboot your computer
This will now have hidden the user from the welcome screen. If you need to login with the hidden account simply press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice at the welcome screen and it will then display the old W2K logon style box to be able to logon to the account you've hidden. Adding a username and setting the value to 1 will cause that user, such as Administrator, to show up on the Welcome screen as well.
