After you install Windows 2000 or XP, you will find from time to time when installing or updating components in Windows it will always ask for the Windows CD even if you copy the I386 files to your local drive.
This guide will take you through step by step setting up Windows to point to the Windows I386 folder located in the root of your local drive. in this example we have copied the I386 foldered located on the Windows CD to the C Drive (C:\I386).
Carry out the following steps. It would be highly recommended you print this page off to make it easier.
- Click Start and then Click Run.
- In the Open box type regedit then press enter or click OK
- Now go to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
- On the right hand window locate SourcePath and double click on it.
- Replace the Drive Letter to C:\ and then click OK (if you copied the files to your C:\ drive then make sure it's C:\ and not C:\i386)
- Now go to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion
- On the right hand window locate SourcePath and double click on it.
- Replace the Drive letter from your CD/DVD drive to your C Drive so it reads C:\I386 and then press enter or click OK
- Now exit the Registry Editor.
If you computer ever needs the Windows CD for the I386 files it will now automatically look in the C:\I386 folder. It will also use this location for when you run the System File Checker (SFC) to find and fix damaged Windows files.
